NYPD Promotion to Sergeant · Exam No. 7533

Filing opens October 7, 2026.
The test date isn't announced yet.

This is the first NYPD Sergeant exam since 2022 — four years of eligible officers sitting for one exam. DCAS has published the filing date but not the Notice of Examination, which is the document that sets the test date and, just as importantly, the cutoff date for what material is testable.

What the Notice of Examination will tell you

  • The test date. Historically the multiple-choice test falls roughly four to five months after filing opens — but that is a pattern, not a promise, and DCAS has amended notices before.
  • The material cutoff. The 2022 notice limited questions to sources “in effect up to and including” a specific date. Anything revised after that date is off the test — which means studying the wrong revision is wasted effort.
  • The source list. In 2022 that meant the Patrol Guide, Administrative Guide, Operations and Interim Orders, Legal Bulletins, the Penal Law, the Criminal Procedure Law, the Administrative Code and more.
